What’s Included in the Video Series
Transform your horse’s training with this comprehensive step-by-step video course. Each module builds upon the last, creating a foundation of trust, respect, and responsiveness between you and your horse. Here’s a detailed breakdown of what you’ll learn:
Step 1: Desensitizing Your Horse to Your Tools
Begin every session by desensitizing your horse to the tools you’ll use. This is crucial for building trust and ensuring your horse feels safe and relaxed. Using the approach-and-retreat method or maintaining a stimulus until your horse relaxes will teach them to stand calmly and transfer this skill directly to riding.
Step 2: Teaching Your Horse to Back Up
Backing up is a fundamental skill that promotes respect and responsiveness. Incorporate this exercise into every interaction to establish control and prepare your horse for advanced maneuvers.
Step 3: Moving the Hindquarters
Teach your horse to move their hindquarters on cue—a vital skill for under-saddle work and everyday handling. This creates a solid foundation for further training.
Step 4: Moving the Shoulders
This step often requires patience, as some horses may resist. Teaching your horse to move their shoulders easily on cue ensures safer handling and improves their ability to pivot, perform showmanship maneuvers, and navigate tight spaces. Under saddle it sets the foundation for turn on the haunches and collection.
Day 2-3: Refining the Foundations
Revisit and perfect the foundational skills learned so far. Repetition and consistency during this phase will prepare your horse for sidepassing to the mounting block. Take as long as you need to get these foundation exercises down before moving on to Step 5.
Step 5: Sidepassing Along the Fence
Learn to combine hindquarter and shoulder movements to teach your horse to sidepass along a fence. Start with pauses between movements, gradually transitioning to a fluid sidepass as your horse gains confidence.
Step 6: Sidepassing to You Off the Fence
This step helps your horse overcome any feelings of restriction from the fence when teaching them to sidepass to you. While some forward movement is natural at first, your horse will soon gain confidence and refine their sidepassing skills with practice.
Step 7: Sidepassing to You on the Fence
Master the sidepass toward you while on the fence. This will take out any forward movement from your horse and set the movement in their head. Consistency is key to ensuring both you and your horse are comfortable during this exercise. Take as many days as you need to get this down.
Day 7-8: Reviewing and Polishing Sidepassing Skills
Use these sessions to review, address any gaps in your horse’s foundation, and introduce the “finish cue.” A strong foundation ensures success as you move forward.
Step 8: Introducing the Mounting Block
Combine everything you’ve learned so far by introducing the mounting block. Focus on rewarding even the smallest steps toward the block, building your horse’s confidence through repetition and positive reinforcement. Since you are no longer moving with your horse, there will be moment of uncertainty.
Step 9: Adding the Rider
Congratulation! Celebrate reaching this milestone! During the first week, practice mounting five times per session to ensure your horse feels relaxed and confident.
Troubleshooting Common Challenges
This video addresses common issues that may arise during mounting. You’ll also learn how groundwork, such as lunging, can prepare your horse for mounting exercises—whether on a lead line or at liberty.
Each lesson is designed to build trust, refine skills, and ensure both you and your horse feel confident and prepared for the next step in your journey together.
